How to Care for Full-Grain Leather Shoes (So They Last a Decade)
Full-grain leather is the top layer of the hide, left with its natural grain intact rather than sanded or corrected. It is the strongest, most breathable part of the skin and the only grade that develops a true patina. It is also what every Afloir shoe is made from. Treated well, a full-grain shoe does not wear out; it wears in. This is the routine that keeps it that way.
The five-minute habit after every wear
When you take your shoes off, brush them with a horsehair brush to lift dust and dirt before it settles into the grain, then put in cedar shoe trees. Cedar draws moisture out of the lining, holds the shape of the toe and heel, and stops the creases across the vamp from setting into cracks. If you do nothing else on this list, do this.
Rotate your shoes
Leather needs roughly 24 hours to dry fully after a day of wear. Wearing the same pair two days running traps moisture in the lining, which is what makes leather go stiff, smell, and eventually crack. Two pairs in rotation will each last far longer than twice as long as one pair worn daily. A dress oxford and a loafer cover most weeks.
Clean, then condition (monthly)
Wipe the uppers with a damp cloth to remove salt and grime, let them dry naturally, then work a small amount of leather conditioner or cream in with a soft cloth in circular motions. Conditioner replaces the oils that flex and weather pull out of the hide; without it, full-grain leather dries and cracks along the creases. Buff off the excess with a clean brush after ten minutes. Once a month is enough for regular wear; more often if the shoes get wet frequently.
Polish for shine and protection (as needed)
Wax polish sits on top of the leather rather than sinking in, so it adds shine and a thin protective layer but does not condition. Apply sparingly with a cloth, let it haze, and buff. Concentrate on the toe and heel, and go easy on the vamp where the leather flexes, because heavy wax there will crack. Hand-painted or patina finishes (like Afloir's patina wingtip derby) should be polished with neutral wax only so the colour depth is not flattened.
Suede and nubuck are different
Do not use cream or wax on suede or nubuck. Brush with a suede brush to lift the nap, use a suede eraser on marks, and apply a suede protector spray before the first wear and every few months after. If suede gets soaked, stuff it with paper, dry it away from heat, and brush once dry. The suede oxfords and suede loafers in the range will hold up for years on this routine.
Wet weather
If your shoes get drenched, do not put them near a radiator or in direct sun. Fast drying shrinks and cracks leather. Stuff them with newspaper or shoe trees, let them dry at room temperature for a day or two, then condition. Salt stains from winter pavements come off with a cloth dampened with a 50:50 mix of water and white vinegar.
Soles and heels
Check the heel every couple of months. Once the rubber or leather top-piece wears down to the heel block, have it replaced; it is inexpensive and prevents damage to the shoe's structure. Goodyear welted shoes can be fully resoled several times by any good cobbler; Blake stitched shoes need a cobbler with a Blake machine (read our guide to Goodyear welt vs Blake stitch). Resoling a handmade shoe costs a fraction of replacing it and keeps the upper, which by then has moulded to your foot.
Storage
Store shoes in a cool, dry place with shoe trees in, ideally in a cloth bag if they are not in the rotation. Never store leather in plastic, which traps moisture and encourages mould.
The kit you actually need
A horsehair brush, a pair of cedar shoe trees per pair of shoes, a tin of neutral leather conditioner, a neutral wax polish and a couple of soft cloths. That is it. Everything else is optional. With this routine a pair of full-grain leather shoes will comfortably outlast the suit you bought them for.
